Census summaries and transmittal letters of select almshouses, 1900-1914 (bulk 1900-1904)

The series consists of transmittal letters, some containing summary reporting data on admissions and discharges, and a few notices of discharge of individual inmates. The records were sent by superintendents of various county almshouses to the State Board of Charities as required by law. Many are handwritten on institutional letterhead and signed by the superintendent. Many carry a date stamp showing receipt by the State Board of Charities.

Legislation enacted in 1875 (Chapter 141) required superintendents of the poor, and other officers charged with relief and support of indigent persons, to furnish keepers and officers in charge of poorhouses and almshouses with "as full information as practicable in relation to each person" whom they had referred to such institutions.
